Hey Claire, thanks for this. I’ve certainly met people where this is true. Conversely, I’ve met those who are vehemently ‘non-political’ because they feel completely ostracised or divorced from any political process because the system has disempowered them. Last year I was working at a local trauma support drop-in and some of the women there were talking about how they’ve never voted because they see all politicians as the same — these are the politicians whose government has taken their kids off them, that is medicating them without consent, that doesn’t allow them access to secure housing. I think it’s worth remembering those in the margins that don’t identify as political as a rejection of the sham of politics, and that thinking, talking about or conceptualising politics is so far removed from the daily struggles of existing that it’s not something they have any capacity for thinking about.
