Essences are incredible tools to use in times of fear, struggle and illness. They take us out of our heads and into our hearts, enabling us to access and listen to the wisdom that resides here and that speaks from our soul. There are so many ways we can work with essences; I shall explore some of these with you today as we weave our way through the abundant offerings of plant, stone and animal medicine that essences hold.

In the Northern Hemisphere, we are celebrating Ostara, the Spring Equinox. I personally love the energy of equinoxes; for me they feel like portal times, walking through a gateway into another time as we transition from one season to the next.

I shall share with you some of the rituals I enjoy practicing at this time, they feel potent and rich in medicine. I hope they help you too. But first, a message about the energy at the time.

Or, Please Stop Appropriating Historically Radical Events For Your Own Financial Gain Whilst Reinforcing Oppressive Exclusionary Systems.

Three weeks ago I was invited to do a 15-minute TED-style talk at an upcoming International Women’s Day event that a local bar is organising. After they accepted my proposed topic, I received unexpected news that anyone wishing to attend would be charged £6 entry fee. This immediately made me feel uncomfortable, my initial thoughts being:

  • Why is there a door tax for an event that should be inclusive?
  • Why, if a fee is being charged, are the speakers not being paid?
  • Why is none of the entry fee being donated to a charity or campaign group that supports the…

A poem inspired by summer holiday struggles.

Solfach by Chris Neale

How can I
Be the source
Of all you need,
Little one,
And still be
The source
Of all I need?

How can I
Provide the
Safety,
Security,
Stability,
Society Says
You need;

And

How do I fulfil
And meet
Those needs;

And

How do we
Make fun,
Be present,
Enjoy this relationship,
Mother-daughter,
Creating,
Laughing;

And

How do I cultivate
And nurture
Patience,
Tolerance,
Compassion,
Understanding

When

Resources
And support
And time
And money
And full bellies
And friends
And sleep

Are sparse,
Thin,
Elusive,
Exhausted;

And

How am I
Supposed to
“Earn a living”
(Like life is to be earned)…

I dreamt of you again last night
Though this time it was weird;
You morphed into Gene Wilder,
Lying at the foot of the stairs
In the house where I birthed
Teenage angst,
Flesh,
Blood.

Curled in a foetal position,
Your once ginger hair
Now grey and wired.
Sallow skin,
Shiny with tears.

Last week I dreamt
You had returned.
I met you at the station.
Hot rage and grief poured;
Filled the forecourt and
You took it.

You stood there;
In the flames and
Monsoons and
You saw it,
You felt it,
You took it.

I forget how brave…

These are hard times, my friend. And in hard times we need a strong support network. My allies often come from nature, so I share with you now the Essences that keep me going through dark and bewildering days. For we have work to do, and we must continue.

The Red Rooster — Marc Chagall

Remember 2016? What japes! Such a hoot. All the lols. I’m kidding, obvs. Thanks, Yang Fire Monkey for building a bonfire and throwing us on the top.

Unfortunately, we don’t get off that easy just because it’s a new year. We’re still in Fire energy; fire being all about action, so the Rooster is asking us ‘If not now, when?’. This is not a year for sitting by, idly doing nothing. There is a need for movement and purpose-full response. Conversely, there is a need for pause and stillness as we go inwards, thanks to the yin energy cooling things…

Waxing Moon rising over Fairwood Common, Gower, 12th November 2016.

Beloved one,
I ask of you, please;
Pour your light over me.

Fill me with courage, to shine
With brazen grace and modesty;
To flow with the tides
You so beautifully conduct;
For I am your student,
Devoted in practice,
Rooted in rhythm,
Still struggling with stage fright.

I ask of you, please;
Illuminate the wisdom that resides in my shadows.
Elucidate the path I falter to walk.
The task feels great,
And I am so weary.

Take me into your loving light.
Release all the binds.

I surrender.

Beloved one,
I ask of you, please;
Soothe the overwhelm
That threatens to engulf
As I forget to trust
The process of breathing.
